The Day Of The Interview
This
is the day you need to show to the employer who has invited you for an
interview that you cannot only do the job, but you have real interest and
commitment to the organization itself. Therefore it is expected that you have
done all necessary preparation prior to the day of the interview. Again, this
will help calm any nerves.
Wake
up early on the day of the interview, if you are the type that has problem with
waking up early, set your alarm to help wake you up. Take a bath and freshen
up. Take a light breakfast, one you are use to and get dressed. What to wear depend upon the sort of job you
will be doing, but in general you need to dress smartly and be well presented.
Prepare clothing the day before the interview so you are not panicking on the
day itself. Looking good will help you feel more confident.
Grab
your interview bag and confirm that all your written information that you need
to take to the interview – directions, interview letter etc are in it. Also
make sure to have with you at least three copies of your CV, references,
certificates and record of achievement if you have them. Take along any other
document you think may be needed. Once you are satisfied with what you are
having with you and comfortable with what you are wearing, then it’s time to
go.
Aim
to arrive at the interview venue 15-20 minutes before the time of the
interview. Smile and be polite to everyone you meet as you enter the venue.
Remember that your interview may likely start as you step into the venue and
they may be asked their opinion of you based on your attitude. When you arrive
give your name to the receptionist or whoever is there to greet you and who you
have come to see. Relax yourself and keep calm, chat to the receptionist, or
whoever greets you before going into the interview; this will help calm you.
You can also chat with other candidates. Take deep breaths to help calm your
nerves.
Here
are the things you should do during the interview…
- Be attentive to hear when you are called up
- Enter the room confidently making eye contact with the interviewer(s)
- Shake hands firmly and introduce yourself
- Smile
- Be polite and friendly
- Sit down only when invited to
- Sit down smartly in an upright position and as comfortable as possible
- Maintain eye contact while you are talking
- Look interested and be very attentive
- Keep your answers brief and to the point but avoid just saying ‘yes’ or ‘no’
- Provide examples to prove your skills and achievements
- Don’t talk more than you are asked
- Avoid lies… tell the truth
- Listen attentively
- Ask if you didn’t hear very well or don’t understand a question
- Speak clearly
- Be positive and sell yourself
- Answer questions with example
- Be confident
- Ask your questions.
And
also the things you shouldn't do in an interview…
- Don’t sit down until you are asked to
- Don’t fold your arms or fidget
- Never swear - even mildly
- Never criticize your past employers
- Don’t interrupt the interviewer
- Avoid talking about your weaknesses
- Avoid appearing desperate
- Don’t handle anything and keep your eyes off the interviewer’s desk
- Don’t discuss personal problems
- Don’t look at your watch
- Don’t ask about money
Your success on the day of the
